Submit your final project in which you use appropriate terminology and primary and secondary (scholarly) sources to analyze a “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid using two literary theories, historical criticism and reader-response. Explain the tenets and basic assumptions of each theory; then posit an argument for each theory’s interpretation of the text. Remember that theoretical analysis is not thematic analysis, so be sure to explore the theory and the text equally rather than demonstrating how particular themes appear in the work. Instead, bring the theory and the text into equal dialogue in your analysis. Finally, summarize and reflect upon your interpretations by exploring what changed in the text and why, and end by evaluating the role of literary theory in literary studies.
