Global Food Security Issues

This assignment is an introduction to food security, defined by the UN as having continual physical and economic access to food. The Reveron and Mahoney-Norris chapter from 6.1 discussed the status of food security globally, and these readings present various aspects of the threat. The Messer and Cohen reading probes the relationship between food security, conflict, and the processes of globalization, while the World Food Programme study on Yemen provides a detailed examination of food security in a country. As you are reading, consider both the connection between food insecurity and other types of human security threats and the impacts of globalization on food security, particularly in the context of Yemen. READINGS • Conflict, Food Insecurity, and Globalization (Food, Culture & Society: An International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research – PDF) (ATTACHED) Read the entire article. • Comprehensive Food Security Survey: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in Yemen (World Food Programme – PDF)(ATTACHED) Read the entire article. ASSIGNMENT: Based on the readings, write a response paper answering the following questions (500 words minimum): 1. How can other human security threats influence food security, and how does food insecurity influence other human security threats (within a country and elsewhere)?  2. What are some ways international actors and the processes of globalization (economic, political, or social) can impact food vulnerability? How can globalization also have a positive impact on food security? Discuss these questions in the context of the case of Yemen.
