In 2017, a survey conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs asked about possible threats to the United States over the next ten years. Below is that list. You must write a 5 page paper in which you answer the following questions:
Which issue do you think is the biggest global security threat over the next ten years? (You may write about something not on the list, but be sure to explain why you think it is the biggest threat.) What theories from class explain why the issue you chose is the biggest threat, and not others? What do you think is the best way to address that threat?
Cyber attacks on US computer networks
North Koreas nuclear program
Political instability in the middle east
The possibility of any new countries acquiring nuclear weapons
Russian influence in American elections
The development of china as a world power
Large numbers of immigrants and refugees coming into the US
Theories- Realism, liberalism, Constructivism, Bureaucratic politics
The best papers will (a) clearly state which issue is the biggest global issue; (b) use course readings theories and concepts to help explain why the issue is the biggest global security issue compared to other potential issues; and (c) offer suggestions for addressing that issue. The strongest papers will spend the most time on part (b), using theories and concepts from class to argue why your issue, and not others, is the most serious issue in global security.
