Scenario: Well known big box discounter Target Corporation has recently begun a campaign to shift away from its reputation as a discount chain and more to mid-range retailer offering affordable items in partnerships with luxury designers, expanded offerings for apparel and the home, and more organic and craft-oriented grocery offerings. This change in strategy has resulted in a new corporate direction for the organization, which is summarized in its mission statement: Our mission is to make Target your preferred shopping destination in all channels by delivering outstanding value, continuous innovation and exceptional guest experiences by consistently fulfilling our Expect More. Pay Less. brand promise. Assignment Checklist: Describe how the four functions of management relate to each other. Introduce Target and its current corporate mission. Keeping in mind the organization’s mission, identify one strategic goal and trace that goal through the tactical and operational levels of planning with one specific example at each level. Specify the appropriate type of role in the organization responsible for managing the goals at each level (organizing function) as well as what forms of power would be most useful in each level (leading function).
