The Experience of Observing a Child

The purpose of this assignment is for you to observe a child and to interpret your observations from a developmental point of view.  The experience of observing a child will help solidify your understanding of physical, emotional, social, cognitive and language development and how these different areas are interrelated. .Part 1:  Watch/Observe an assigned Video You will watch a video and observe a child’s developmental milestones noting the different domains that he is achieving at his given age (3 years and 5 months – 4 years old).  Although this is a 40 minute video, I am only requiring you to watch from 21:45 -41:00 minutes  (only 20 minutes worth).    While watching the video, take detailed notes to help you do the analysis for your report. Here is the link of the video to watch:    Child Observation THE 3 TO 4 YEAR OLD Learning Through Play  (Links to an external site.) You will compare the child’s development to milestones that are typically achieved in the preschool years. It is important to remember that individual differences exist when it comes to the age at which children meet these milestones. Milestones should not be seen as a rigid checklist to judge children’s development, but rather as guides for when to expect certain skills or behaviors to emerge in young children. Think of these milestones as guidelines to help you understand and identify typical patterns of growth and development in children. Although developmental milestones develop in a predictable sequence, always keep in mind that each child is unique. Part 2:  Analyze and write the different developmental skills that you have observed After your video observation, you will analyze your notes to report on the child’s physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development in a written report. Your paper should be a minimum of 3 pages long, typed and double-spaced in 12-inch font. Include a References page. Use your observation notes, information from the Developmental Milestones resources provided on Canvas, our textbook, and your growing knowledge of child development to answer the ALL of the questions on the next page. Feel free to use additional resources as well.   Organize your report as outlined below: 1. Physical Development: a. Fine motor: What fine motor skills did you observe the child using? Describe at least 3 specific examples. How does the child’s development in this domain compare with typical milestones for this age? Explain.   b.Gross motor: What gross motor skills did you observe the child using? Describe at least 3 specific examples. How does the child’s development in this domain compare with typical milestones for this age? Explain. Cognitive Development: Describe at least 3 activities in which the child demonstrated cognitive abilities such as problem solving, simple reasoning, understanding cause and effect and other conceptual understanding. Is this what we would expect for his or her age? Explain. 3.  Language Development: a.  Expressive Language (child’s ability to communicate to others) Discuss your observations of the child’s language skills and compare them to typical milestones for this age. How many words and/or length of sentence should the child have for his or her age? Did you see evidence of this? Give examples. If the child did not use words, describe the sounds they made or forms of non-verbal communication skills used. Describe at least 3 examples. b. Receptive Language (child’s ability to understand what is said to him/her by others) Did the child understand what was said to him or her by others? How do you know? Provide examples. 4.  Social Emotional Development: Describe at least 3 specific social-emotional skills and behaviors you observed the child using. How does the child’s development in this domain compare with typical milestones for this age? Explain. Describe the types of play the child engaged in (object play, physical play, pretend play etc.) Discuss the child’s play in terms of what we would expect for a child. Support your analysis with information from the textbook or other sources.   Part 3:   Reflect on Your Learning  Please answer the following questions: How did this assignment contribute to your understanding of child development? What are some insights you gained about the individual child you observed in the video? (For example: his particu Part 3:   Reflect on Your Learning  Please answer the following questions: How did this assignment contribute to your understanding of child development? What are some insights you gained about the individual child you observed in the video? (For example: his particular strengths, abilities, interests, personality, temperament etc.) What was the most meaningful thing you learned from this assignment and why?
